HKBU names new Dean of Arts


Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) announced today the appointment of Professor Mette Hjort as new Dean of Arts, with effect from 15 August 2018.

Professor Hjort is currently Professor (Chair) of Film Studies at the Department of Media, Cognition and Communication, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Prior to her current appointment, Professor Hjort had worked in universities in Hong Kong, from 2001-2016 at The University of Hong Kong and then Lingnan University. She was Associate Vice-President (Academic Quality Assurance and Internationalisation) and Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Visual Studies at Lingnan University. She was also a member of the University Grants Committee from 2013 to 2016.

A prominent and distinguished scholar, Professor Hjort’s research spans the fields of literary studies, theatre studies, philosophy and film and media studies. Much of her research has focused on the cinema of small nations, with a special emphasis on practitioner’s agency, creativity under constraint, and artistic projects as alternatives or complements to cultural policy, gift culture, and milieu-building. Professor Hjort has collaborated with FilmLab: Palestine, the Danish Film Institute, and the Danish House in Ramallah, in connection with initiatives for children and youth. She has also collaborated with the alternative film school, Imagine, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in West Africa. She has been recognised as a leader in pioneering and significantly establishing the field of small nation cinema studies.

Announcing the appointment, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU Professor Roland Chin said: “Professor Hjort is an internationally recognised scholar with ample, wide-ranging experience in teaching, research and higher education administration. I believe that under the leadership of Professor Hjort, our Faculty of Arts will further strengthen HKBU’s contribution to the development of creative media and the cultural arena in Hong Kong and the world.”

Professor Hjort obtained her Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, Theatre, and Film and Communications and Master’s degree in Communications from McGill University, Canada, and her PhD in History and Civilisations from École des hautes études en sciences sociales, France. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Aalborg University in Denmark in 2017.


香港浸會大學宣佈,委任樂美德教授(Professor Mette Hjort)為文學院院長,由2018年8月15日起生效。


樂美德教授是國際知名學者,研究範疇涵蓋文學、戲劇、哲學、電影與媒介研究,尤其精於研究小國的電影發展,特別是電影從業員代理、規範中的創意、補足文化政策的藝術項目、業界的送禮文化,以及跨國文化背景建立等。樂美德教授與FilmLab: Palestine、Danish Film Institute和 Danish House in Ramallah合作發展兒童和青少年項目,又與西非國家布吉納法索的電影學院 Imagine合作。她是公認首屈一指的小國電影研究先鋒,貢獻良多。


樂美德教授於加拿大麥吉爾大學(McGill University)獲英國文學、戲劇、電影與傳播學學士和傳播學碩士,並在法國巴黎高等社會科學院(École des hautes études en sciences sociales)獲歷史和文化博士學位。她於2017年獲丹麥奧爾堡大學(Aalborg University)頒授榮譽博士。
