HKBU’s response to 2017 Policy Address

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) welcomes the Government’s plan to set up a $12 billion Hostel Development Fund to provide unit cost subsidy for the construction of university hostels. HKBU President Professor Roland Chin commends the proposal as it will definitely ease the severe shortfall of student hostel places and in the long term help enhance students’ whole person development as well as promote campus internationalisation.

President Chin also welcomes the Government’s proposal of increasing research funding for the higher education sector and the plan to double the Gross Domestic Expenditure on R&D as a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product from 0.73% to 1.5% in five years. He considers these show an important commitment to elevate the level of innovation and technological development in Hong Kong, which would help boost Hong Kong’s long-term competitiveness.
