HKBU scholars to introduce award-winning invention of portable device for quick and accurate detection of lead contamination in water

浸大學者研發手提式鉛離子測試儀 快速準確檢測「鉛水」濃度 周二分享研究成果

Excessive lead contamination in drinking water is hazardous to health. Tasteless and odourless, lead may go undetected in drinking water, and currently the only way to check if water is contaminated with lead is by sending the water sample for testing to laboratories equipped with professional machines. The research team at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Department of Chemistry invented a portable device for one-stop detection of lead concentration in water. With the new portable device and a smart phone, a person can carry out on-site lead testing of drinking water in a simple way. Ease of use, quick and accurate detection and low cost are the key advantages of this device. Their invention has been granted a Hong Kong patent and won the research team the gold medal at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva held in Switzerland in April 2018.

The research team comprises Assistant Professor Dr Ren Kangning, Associate Professor Dr Edmond Ma of the Department of Chemistry of HKBU and scholars of the University of Macau.

Dr Ren and his team will meet with the media on Tuesday to share the findings and give a demonstration using the portable device.

食水含鉛量超標會影響市民健康,市民無法口嚐或聞到飲用水是否含鉛量超標,只能將水樣本送到化驗室待專業人員檢測,耗時且費用高。香港浸會大學的化學系團隊發明了「一站式便攜鉛離子測試儀」,使用手提式設備配合智能手機便能快速準確地檢測出生活用水中鉛濃度是否超標,方便快捷、使用簡單、成本低廉和靈敏度高,可及早發現鉛污染問題。新發明於今年四月在瑞士舉行的第46屆日內瓦國際發明展上贏得金獎,並獲得本港專利。

研究團隊包括浸大化學系助理教授任康寧博士、副教授馬迪龍博士和澳門大學學者。

任博士與團隊將於周二與傳媒會面,分享他們的研究成果,並示範使用測試儀,詳情如下:
