HKBU scholars to introduce world-first array of compounds for detection, imaging and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease

浸大學者首創認知障礙症檢測、成像和治療化合物系列 後天分享研究成果

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common neurodegenerative disorder, it is incurable and the underlying cause is still not well understood. Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Chemistry scholars have developed a new class of multifunctional compounds that can be used for detection, imaging, and thus treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Their discoveries have been granted four US patents and a patent by the Chinese government.

The research team was led by Professor Ricky Wong Man-shing and Associate Professor Dr Li Hung-wing of the Department of Chemistry of HKBU. The new compounds they developed have been proved able to detect Alzheimer’s disease related proteins in human fluids in trace amounts sensitively, accurately, rapidly and at a low cost. Its characteristics also serve as a good imaging agent for understanding the pathogenesis of the disease. The compounds have a high potential to serve as a novel alternative non-invasive tool for population-wide screening for the disease.

The team will meet with the media on Thursday to share the findings. Details of the sharing session are as follow:
