World renowned scholar in Chinese history Professor William Kirby to speak at HKBU Distinguished Lecture


The Department of History of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) is holding a public lecture on 14 November (Tuesday) to be delivered by Professor William C Kirby, T M Chang Professor of China Studies, Harvard University; Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School; and recipient of an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from HKBU in 2017.
Based on a series of Harvard Business School cases, Professor Kirby will explore China’s capacity to lead the world under the title “A Chinese Century? Infrastructure, Entrepreneurship and Education in the 21st Century”.

Britain and Germany set global standards in the 19th century. The 20th century has been called “The American Century.” What, then, are the prospects for Chinese Leadership in the 21st Century? This Lecture, based on a series of Harvard Business School cases, will explore China’s capacity to lead the world in higher education, entrepreneurship, infrastructure and power (hard and soft) in this century. As Europe and America turn inward, can China lead?
Professor William Kirby is a leading historian of modern China with research interests that extend to China’s business, economic and political development in an international context. He has published extensively on contemporary issues of Chinese society, including China’s relations with Europe, the history of China’s modern capitalism, the history of freedom in China, and relations across the Taiwan Strait.
An experienced and highly dynamic university administrator, Professor Kirby was Head of Harvard’s History Department, Director of the Harvard University Asia Center, and Dean of Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He also holds other important positions at Harvard University which have contributed greatly to developing relations with China. He was Director of Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and serves as Chairman of the Harvard China Fund and Faculty Chair of the Harvard Center Shanghai.
Professor Kirby has an in-depth familiarity with the higher education sector in Hong Kong. He was a member of the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong and was Chairperson of the Selection Panel of the UGC Teaching Award.
