HKBU Museum of Chinese Medicine to unveil exhibition of Professor Paul U Unschuld’s Collection of Valuable Chinese Medicine Artefacts tomorrow


The Dr & Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) tomorrow (10 October) will host the grand opening of an exhibition of valuable Chinese medicine artefacts collected by the famous German sinologist and medical historian Professor Paul U Unschuld. On display will be numerous Chinese medical artefacts collected by Professor Unschuld over the course of 40 years, including acupuncture illustrations, herbal formulas, herbal shop signs and decocting vessels. After a four-month exhibit on HKBU campus, the collection will travel to the United States to promote the culture of Chinese medicine abroad.

The School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU will host an opening ceremony for the exhibition tomorrow. Professor Unschuld will be invited to officiate at the ceremony. Details of the ceremony are as follows:

Professor Unschuld graduated from the University of Munich, Germany and obtained his PhD with research topic related to Chinese medicine. A prolific author with brilliant achievements, his principal research direction is focused on comparative history in Chinese and European medical and life sciences. Since 2006, he has been serving as the Founding Director of the Horst-Goertz-Institute for the Theory, History, and Ethics of Chinese Life Sciences of Charité-Universitaetsmedizin Berlin. Professor Unschuld has also served as the Director of the Research Institute for the History of Medicine at Munich University, and as the Vice Chair of the Chinese-German Medical Society and as the President of the International Society for the History of East Asian Science, Technology and Medicine. This year he received the 11th Special Book Award of China from the Chinese government.

香港浸會大學孔憲紹博士伉儷中醫藥博物館將於明日(10月10日)開始舉辦為期四個月的「文樹德教授珍藏中醫藥文物展」,展出著名德國漢學家、醫史專家文樹德教授(Professor Paul U Unschuld)四十年來珍藏的一批中醫藥文物,包括針灸掛圖、藥方、藥店牌匾、藥罐等。該批珍貴的文物於香港展覽後將運往美國等地作巡迴展覽,藉此弘揚中醫藥文化。
