Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), attended the 6th plenary meeting of the International Organisation for Standardisation Technical Committee on Traditional Chinese Medicine (ISO/TC249) held in Beijing from 1 to 4 June, in the capacity of Head and Spokesperson of the China delegation. The meeting was attended by 269 representatives from 12 ISO/TC249 member countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and Korea, as well as ISO headquarters, World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies.

Professor Lu presented at the meeting a report entitled “The name of ISO/TC249” to elucidate the grounds for using “traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)” as the name of ISO/TC249 and introduce the latest developments of Chinese medicine in other countries in the areas of education, legislation, healthcare and trade. The report was unanimously endorsed at the meeting by the Chinese and foreign experts, and the name of “TCM” was supported by the majority of the member countries.

An independent, non-governmental organisation, ISO is the world’s largest developer of voluntary international standards. Established in 2009, ISO/TC249 convenes annual plenary meetings to discuss TCM standardisation projects and important matters which fall under its jurisdiction. The work of ISO/TC249 consists of the setting up of international standards for Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medicine products, acupuncture apparatus, Chinese medicine equipment and Chinese medicine informatics, which have a great impact on Chinese medical services, Chinese medicine products and related industries.

Professor Lu has been serving as Head of the China delegation since the first plenary meeting of ISO/TC249 in 2010, and has made important contributions to the establishment of international standards for Chinese medicine. SCM of HKBU was designated as the support unit of China for the joint working group of ISO/TC249 and the Technical Committee on Health Informatics (ISO/TC215). As the support unit, SCM is responsible for conducting research on and coordinating the establishment of international standards of information on traditional Chinese medicine.
