HKBU scholar and student receive Hong Kong Arts Development Awards

Dr Leung Mee-ping, Assistant Professor of the Academy of Visual Arts, was selected as Artist of the Year (Visual Arts) while Mr Enoch Tam, PhD student of the School of Communication, received the Award for Young Artist (Arts Criticism) at the recent Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2014. The awards are presented to acknowledge arts practitioners who have achieved excellence in their respective art forms.

In response to receiving the honour, Dr Leung said, “Over the years, many people have asked me: ‘Do you ever sleep?’ In fact, I do not sleep much, but I never stop dreaming.” In a recent art talk she hosted, Dr Leung invited renowned local graffiti writer “The Plumbing Master”. She said his curiosity, passion and focus, and willingness to take risks enables him to invent many creative tools for a living. Dr Leung considers this “an ordinary life with extraordinary creativity” which she would like to share with students.

Dr Leung’s many artistic endeavours include visual culture, space saving creativity, traditional handicrafts, installations, public art and community art.

Enoch first turned his pen to literature 10 years ago, hoping to add a new level of breadth and depth to Hong Kong literature through his critical writings. Then he shifted his focus to film critique and contributed regularly to the Hong Kong Film Critics Society website and later Cinezen, a film review website that he set up. Being a film critic, his work raises the bar of film criticism, in particular public dialogues on Hong Kong cinema. Currently, he boasts a monthly output of over 10,000 words in the form of short reviews and lengthy essays.

Enoch thanked his PhD supervisor Professor Emilie Yeh, Director of the Academy of Film, for the professional insights she imparts during numerous thought-provoking discussions.

In addition, HKBU affiliated school Wong Kam-fai Secondary and Primary School (Secondary) was presented the Award for Arts Education in the School Division category.
