Chinese medicine PhD student wins Best Student Research Paper Award


Miss Su Tao, PhD student of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), recently won the “Best Student Research Paper Award” presented by the Global Science and Technology Forum (GSTF) at the 2nd Annual International Conference on Advances in Cancer Medical Research held in Singapore.

Miss Su’s award-winning paper is entitled “An ethanolic extract of Pinelliae Rhizoma inhibits proliferation and induces apoptosis through suppressing PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling and ROS-mediated MAPKs activation in liver cancer cells”. Although Pinelliae Rhizoma (PR) is commonly prescribed by Chinese medicine practitioners for treating liver cancer, the molecular mechanisms underlying its anti-liver cancer activity are not fully understood. Miss Su’s study demonstrated that an ethanolic extract of PR inhibits the proliferation of liver cancer cells and induces cell death through the suppression of PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling and activation of ROS-mediated MAPKs. The data provides a pharmacological justification for the clinical application of PR in treating liver cancer.

Miss Su was honoured to receive the award and expressed her gratitude to her supervisor Dr Yu Zhiling, Associate Professor of the Teaching and Research Division and Associate Director of the Technology Development Division, SCM, for his guidance and encouragement. She also thanked all those who had helped her with her studies. Miss Su said that she would continue to use her best endeavours in achieving more interesting findings in cancer research.

中醫藥學院博士研究生蘇桃同學早前憑著一篇出色的研究論文,在新加坡舉行的第二屆癌症醫學研究發展國際會議上獲Global Science and Technology Forum頒發「最佳學生研究論文獎」。

蘇同學的得獎論文題為「半夏醇提物抑制肝癌細胞增殖、促進肝癌細胞凋亡通過抑制PI3K/AKT/mTOR以及激活活性氧介導的MAPKs信號通路」。「半夏」是中醫治療肝癌的常見中藥材,可是其抗肝癌機制至今仍有待了解。蘇同學的論文闡明了半夏醇提物可通過抑制PI3K/AKT/mTOR 信號通路,以及激活活性氧介導的MAPKs信號通路,抑制癌細胞增殖及促進癌細胞凋亡達致抗肝癌作用,其實驗結果為臨床應用半夏治療肝癌提供了藥理學基礎。
