More than 60 young scholars gather at HKBU to explore and discuss new directions for China Studies

逾60位年青學者聚首浸大  探討中國研究新方向

The China Studies Programme and the Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies of HKBU co-organised the 2nd Young Scholars’ Conference on China Studies from 15 to 16 December, during which more than 60 young scholars and researchers from around the world had the opportunity to explore and discuss the new directions for China Studies.  

Three renowned scholars were invited to speak at the conference. Professor Hans van de Ven of the University of Cambridge and Professor Andrew Bonnell of the University of Queensland, Australia delivered keynote speeches on “Outsourcing Empire: The Founding of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service” and “ALLTAGSGESCHICHTE: The history of everyday life in Germany: From new social history from below to cultural history to…?” respectively. Professor Liu Shi-yung of the Institute of Taiwanese History of Academia Sinica, Taiwan delivered the closing remarks on “History of Taiwan, China and Asian Studies”.  

A total of 16 panels were held and the topics included Studies in Politics and International Relations, Social Changes in 21st Century China, Religion Studies in Modern China, Hong Kong in Politico-Economic Context, Opportunities of Higher Education in 21st Century China and Reshaping the Historical Images of Imperial China, etc.  

The conference was co-sponsored by the School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences and Institute of Education of Tsinghua University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Queensland, Office of the Deputy President (Research and Technology) of National University of Singapore, Office of the Provost/Vice-President for Academic and Student Life of Central Washington University, and the Institute of Taiwanese History of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. 

浸大中國研究課程和當代中國研究所主辦的第二屆中國研究青年學者研討會於121516日舉行,讓超過60位來自內地及海外的年青學者聚首浸大,探討中國研究的新方向。  

劍橋大學中國近代史專家方德萬教授及昆士蘭大學歷史學系Andrew Bonnell教授分別作主題演講,題為「Outsourcing Empire: The Founding of the Chinese Maritime Customs ServiceALLTAGSGESCHICHTE: The history of everyday life in Germany: From “new social history from below” to cultural history to…?」。臺灣中央研究院臺灣史研究所副所長劉士永教授則以「一沙一世界:臺灣史,中國史,與東亞研究」題目結束會議。  

為期兩天的會議進行了16節討論,課題包括國際政治之探索、21世紀中國社會發展導向、近代中國的宗教信仰研究、政經角度下的香港史、21世紀中國高等教育的新機遇,以及古代中國面貌之重塑等。  

協辦是次會議的單位包括清華大學人文學院、社會科學學院及教育研究院、澳洲昆士蘭大學人文及社會科學院、新加坡國立大學副校長室、中央華盛頓大學副校長室及灣中央研究院台灣史研究所。
