HKBU hosts conference promoting eco-aquaculture practices

The Department of Biology organised the International Conference on Eco-aquaculture and Public Health during which over 100 local and overseas experts discussed issues associated with aquaculture and how to utilise innovative technologies to promote harmless eco-aquaculture practices in the Pearl River Delta including Hong Kong.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr David Foster, Executive Director of the Croucher Foundation; Professor Su Jilan, an Academician from the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration; Professor Liu Jiming, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science; and Professor Yung Kin-lam, Professor of the Department of Biology.

Topics covered in the presentations included China’s approach to marine eco-aquaculture: An overview, risk assessment of toxic algal blooms, threats and opportunities for fish and oyster industry in Hong Kong, research on mercury in the aquatic food webs, treatment of wastewater using phytoremediation, and impacts and risks of aquatic products on human health.

A field trip to Santai Ecofishery Limited in Dongguan which houses an “All Weather Eco Fishery System” was organised as part of the Conference. It is one of the largest indoor fish farms (24,000 squaremetres) in China and utilises an eco-friendly method of culturing edible fish.

The Conference was sponsored by the Croucher Foundation.
