Professor Lu Aiping wins two national awards for his contribution to TCM standardisation in China

Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine, has recently won two national awards for his remarkable contribution in promoting the standardisation of Chinese medicine, namely the “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Standardisation in China” jointly conferred by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the PRC and the Standardisation Administration of the PRC, and the “Award for Promoting Standardisation” presented by the China Association for Standardisation (CAS).

The “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Standardisation in China” is one of the categories designated for individuals in the “Award for Innovative Contribution to Standardisation in China”, which is aimed at recognising standardisation projects, bodies and individuals with special contribution to standardisation with a view to fostering standardisation work in the country. Professor Lu is this year’s winner of the “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Standardisation in China” and is also the first Chinese Medicine researcher to win the individual award.

In addition, Professor Lu was presented with the “2014 Award for Promoting Standardisation” by CAS at its China Standardisation Forum where he delivered a talk entitled “Current Situation and Outlook for Standardisation of Chinese Medicine”. In his talk, Professor Lu said that Chinese medicine is the most unique standardisation area which has a direct bearing on the establishment of international standards for Chinese medicine. The CAS, comprised of societies and individuals engaged in standardisation work in the country, is an important association under the China Association for Science and Technology responsible for academic research, formulation of standards, training, technology exchange, international collaboration, etc.

A leading figure in the standardisation of Chinese medicine, Professor Lu has been serving as the head of the Chinese delegation at the plenary meeting of the International Organisation for Standardisation Technical Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ISO/TC249) since its establishment in 2009. He has been actively participating in the establishment of international standards for the Chinese medicine trade, Chinese herbal medicine, Chinese medicine products, acupuncture apparatus, Chinese medicine equipment and informatics.

Professor Lu is delighted to receive the awards and said: “The Central Government attaches great importance to quality work and standardisation work with a view to increasing the competitiveness of enterprises and industries, fostering the economic development of China and contributing to the modernisation of the country’s governance system. The accolade is particularly meaningful at this time. The awards are not only a personal honour but they also testify to the recognition accorded to the efforts of the industry towards the standardisation of Chinese medicine by the Central Government and standardisation bodies. Undoubtedly, the recognition will spur the development of standardisation of Chinese medicine.” Professor Lu said that the standardisation of Chinese medicine which started in the late 1970s is an arduous and unprecedented endeavour. He hopes that a standardised system of Chinese medicine which is internationally competitive could be established as soon as possible with the Government’s support and the concerted efforts of the industry.
