Two SCM students receive recognition from American Society for Bone and Mineral Research for their outstanding research papers

Mr Liang Chao, PhD student of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) was presented with the 2014 Young Investigator Award by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) at the Society’s annual meeting held in Texas, USA last month. He was invited to deliver his outstanding research paper entitled “Aptamer-Functionalised Lipid Nanoparticles (LNPs) Targeting Osteoblasts as a Novel RNA Interference-Based Bone Anabolic Strategy” at the meeting.

Mr Liang has achieved remarkable advances in the research on bone and joint diseases. He said that while conducting the above mentioned study, an aptamer-functionalised lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) delivery system was successfully developed to achieve accumulation of osteogenic siRNAs in osteoblasts which promotes bone formation in animal models with established osteoporosis. This study facilitates cellular level delivery of osteogenic siRNAs and clinical translation of RNA interference strategy in skeletal metabolic disease with impaired bone formation.

The Society also gave recognition to Miss Dang Lei, a postgraduate student of SCM. She received the 2014 Young Investigator Travel Grant from ASBMR to attend a workshop on “Mechanistic and Therapeutic insights into skeletal biology learned from the study of rare bone diseases” which was held in Texas and to make a poster presentation at the workshop. Her award-winning research paper entitled “A Peptide-functionalised delivery system to target osteoclasts” explores the development of a peptide-functionalised delivery system that selectively targets osteoclasts to facilitate the delivery of therapeutic medicine to osteoclasts.

ASBMR is a leading professional, scientific and medical society established to bring together clinical and experimental scientists engaged in the study of bone and mineral metabolism. It has a membership of nearly 4,000 physicians, basic research scientists and clinical investigators from around the world.
