HKBU's Science Open Day inspires students to explore science behind crystals and its applications

理學院開放日以認識及應用晶體科學為主題

The Open Day which revolved around the theme “A Crystal Future” organised by the Faculty of Science was held today (3 July). Around 1,300 participants including students from primary and secondary schools and the general public attended the event. A Crystal Growing Competition was organised for the first time, enabling teams of secondary school students to grow their own crystals and explore the splendid science behind crystals and its application. Twenty-three secondary school teams took part in the competition. The championship went to Wai Kiu College, the first runner-up was St Paul’s Secondary School and the second runner-up was Shatin Pui Ying College.

In addition, Mr Vincent Chu, Senior Manager, Cree Hong Kong Ltd, was invited to share on the topic “LED Lighting Application and Market Development”. Three HKBU scholars, Professor Chan Wing-hong, Department of Chemistry, Dr Jack Ng, Department of Physics, and Dr Edmond Ma, Department of Chemistry, spoke on the topics “Seeing the Beauty of the Microscopic World through Crystallography”, “The Control of Light by Photonic Crystal” and “Computer-Aided Structure-Based Drug Discovery” respectively.

The Open Day was part of the Science Festival 2014. Activities included talks, games and exhibitions, workshops, laboratory tours and low-carbon campus tours.

浸大理學院今日(7月3日)舉行以「『晶』彩未來」為題的開放日,吸引了共1,300名中、小學生和公眾人士參與。今年理學院更首次舉辦「晶體培植比賽」,讓中學生以小組形式,利用科學原理培植晶體,進一步認識晶體科學及其應用。共23間中學組隊參賽,冠軍由惠僑英文中學隊伍奪得、亞軍是聖保祿中學隊伍、季軍由沙田培英中學隊伍奪得。

科銳香港有限公司高級經理朱文岳先生應邀主講「半導體LED發光技術應用與市場發展」。此外,三位浸大學者,包括化學系陳永康教授、物理系吳紫輝博士和化學系馬迪龍博士,分別就「藉晶體學看眼美麗的微觀世界」、「光子晶體對光的操控」及「基於結構的電腦輔助藥物開發」為題分享見解。

理學院開放日是本年度科學節的其中一個項目,活動包括講座、遊戲及專題展覽、工作坊、參觀實驗室及低碳校園等。
