Top swimmer Derick Ng named Sportsman of the Year

Hong Kong Swimming Team member Derick Ng (Associate Degree, Year 2) beat three candidates from other universities to win the 2013-14 Sportsman of the Year Award presented by the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong (USFHK).

At the 2013-14 USFHK swimming competitions, Derick broke two records by finishing the 100 m freestyle in 51.7” and the 200 m medley in 2’ 09”.

Derick learned to swim at the age of four. He first represented Hong Kong in a competition when he was 10 years old and became a Hong Kong Team member a year later. He has participated in numerous competitions and won many awards. For example, in 2013, he scooped a bronze medal for Hong Kong at the Asian Games, and snatched another bronze medal at the Asia Indoor Games, breaking the Hong Kong record in the 4 x 100 m freestyle relay.

Derick loves swimming because he feels very comfortable in water. He practises 10 times a week, with each session lasting two hours. Although it is examination season for Derick, he will be participating in three competitions in the coming months. He will go to San Francisco, US, for a competition in June, compete in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Australia in August, and at the Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in September. Derick is one of the top swimmers in the Hong Kong team. He says his biggest challenge is to break the Hong Kong record and scale new heights.
