Carol Cao, an MPhil student of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing, was recently awarded a five-year full fellowship of about HK$2.9 million from the prestigious Duke University in the US to pursue a PhD degree in Literature.

Carol is very pleased to have the opportunity to study at Duke. She said: "The selection process was extremely rigorous. I had to go through three interviews, and it was really very challenging for me." She will focus her thesis on the relationship between public culture and urbanisation.

An undergraduate of the HKBU Humanities Programme, Carol attributes her success to the training she received during the Programme: "It equipped me with the unique character and qualities required of a young scholar." She would like to thank Professor Eva Man, Head of the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing and also supervisor of her MPhil thesis, as well as all of her teachers at the Department for their education, support and encouragement during her six years of studies at HKBU.

Professor Man described Carol as an outstanding budding scholar who is highly motivated: "We are all very proud of her. I truly believe that she will complete her PhD project with flying colours."
