HKBU students first in Hong Kong to win CY Tung Scholarship to join Semester at Sea’s 50th Anniversary Spring 2014 voyage

Tang Wai-han (China Studies (History), Year 3) and Lam Tsz-fung (History, Year 3) won the CY Tung Scholarship to join university students from around the globe in spending a semester on the “floating campus” of Semester at Sea (SAS). With the theme “Around the World”, the Spring 2014 voyage will circumnavigate the globe between 10 January to 2 May 2014 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of SAS. The ship will set off from Mexico in North America and sail through Asia and Africa before anchoring in England in Europe, visiting 16 cities in 12 countries on its way.

Mr. CY Tung is the father of former Chief Executive of HKSAR Mr. Tung Chee-hwa. HKBU students are the first Hong Kong students to win the CY Tung Scholarship to enroll in this voyage of SAS since it was launched four years ago. The Scholarship will cover 83% of the expenditure of the Spring 2014 voyage. Together with a special scholarship granted by Professor Albert Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, and the Reaching Out Award from the HKSAR Government, the two students’ journey has been fully funded.

This year, six Chinese students were awarded the Scholarship. The other four award recipients are from Peking University, Fudan University, Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University.

Professor Clara Ho, Professor of History, recommended the two students for the CY Tung Scholarship. She said: “Wai-han and Tsz-fung are very outstanding students of the History Department. They are energetic and ambitious; they are also keen to explore opportunities and to prepare themselves for future challenges. Both of them have had previous overseas exchange experience, leading them to possess vision, courage, and enthusiasm in seeking breakthroughs. The news that both of them have been awarded this prestigious scholarship should bring true pride and excitement to the entire HKBU community. I sincerely wish Wai-han and Tsz-fung will make the best out of this precious learning opportunity to study on board while traveling around the world and exposing themselves to a variety of cultures. I look forward to seeing them return happily with fruitful and memorable experiences.”

The two students expressed sincere thanks to Professor Ho for her encouragement and recommendation. They are also deeply grateful for the support offered by the University. Wai-han said: “It’s my great honor to be selected for the CY Tung Scholarship which granted me a fabulous opportunity to study under SAS. I am thrilled and very much looking forward to studying onboard and exploring the world as well as meeting participants from all parts of the globe. I will undoubtedly treasure this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Tsz-fung said: “I was over the moon when I knew I was selected by the University of Virginia for the SAS programme. I was frantic on the submission deadline day searching for a swift courier to the States and looking up locations of different post offices and courier companies. I am sure this will be an unforgettable journey for me and I will shine throughout the programme with fellow outstanding students.”

All students joining SAS are required to enroll for 12 credits or four classes. Around 80 courses with field trips are offered. Wai-han will study Sino-American Relations, Asian Politics, History of Modern China and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology while Tsz-fung will study History, Social Psychology, Sino-American Relations and Global Environmental Politics.

During the voyage, the ship will sail from Mexico to Hawaii (United States), Japan, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore, Burma, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco and Southampton (England).

Founded in 1963, SAS is the world’s premier global comparative education programme open to students of all majors from around the world. The programme is administered by the Institute for Shipboard Education and the University of Virginia is the academic sponsor. Over the past five decades, SAS sailed about 110 voyages, educated 55,000 students from 1,700 institutions around the world and travelled to more than 60 countries.
