Innovative paper in food waste management wins Best Paper Award

浸大創新處理廚餘論文獲頒最佳論文獎

A scientific paper entitled “Enhancing methane production during two-phase anaerobic digestion of food waste by reutilizing hydrogen and carbon dioxide produced in acidogenic leach bed reactor” by three scholars from the Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment recently won the Alberto Rozzi Best Paper Award at the 14th International Waste Management and Landfill Symposium. The paper was selected as the best paper from more than 100 papers in the area of biological treatment.  

The outstanding paper was co-authored by Professor Jonathan Wong, Director of the Centre, Ms. Binghua Yan and Dr. Ammaiyappan Selvam of the Centre.

According to the judging panel, the paper shows innovative research work that could lead to a breakthrough in two-phase anaerobic digestion revealing the metabolic pathways for increasing methane gas generation. It also highlighted the possibilities and potential applications of a new design of two-phase anaerobic digestion to improve the overall energy recovery from food waste. The paper creatively included the demonstration of microbial dynamics, in particular the fate of syntrophic relationships among the bacteria involved in acidogenesis and acetogenesis, two key processes in anaerobic digestion.

The 14th International Waste Management and Landfill Symposium, held in Sardinia, Italy, attracted around 900 participants this year. It is one of the biggest international conferences in the field of waste management. Professor Jonathan Wong was invited to present the paper at the Symposium.

浸大「嘉漢林業珠三角環境應用研究中心」的三名學者,最近憑著以「通過重用滲濾床反應器中的氫氣和二氧化碳,提高廚餘兩階段厭氧分解的甲烷產量」為題的論文,在第十四屆國際固體廢物處理與堆填論壇中獲頒「Alberto Rozzi最佳論文獎」。該論文在一百多篇有關生物處理方法的文章中獲選為最佳論文。 

論文由研究中心主任黃煥忠教授、博士研究生顏丙花女士和Ammaiyappan Selvam博士共同撰寫。
 

評委會表示,論文展示了一項創新的研究,從代謝的途徑提升甲烷量,對兩個階段的厭氧分解帶來新突破。研究亦提出應用一種兩個階段的厭氧分解廚餘垃圾的新設計,提高能源回收的潛在可能性。研究還包括過程中微生物的動態變化,特別是酸化和產乙酸過程(決定代謝途徑的關鍵過程)中細菌的共生關係。 

國際固體廢物處理與堆填論壇是固體廢物處理界別其中一個最大規模的國際會議,今屆論壇在意大利撒丁島舉行,吸引近九百人出席。黃煥忠教授獲邀在會議上就論文發表演說。
