Communications Studies scholar wins Top Faculty Paper Award

Dr Timothy Fung, Associate Professor of the Department of Communication Studies, won the Top Faculty Paper Award in Communicating Science, Health, Environment and Risk Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). The AEJMC is a major international academic organisation in the field of communication and journalism.

The project, entitled “The role of counterfactual thinking in narrative persuasion: Its impact on patients’ adherence to treatment regimen”, showed that patients who were exposed to narratives with additive counterfactuals experienced greater anticipated regret and mental simulation, which in turn influenced their attitudes and intentions toward treatment adherence. The study provides important insights for health communicators on how to design effective narratives for health promotion.

Dr Fung, using knowledge gained from his research, collaborated with Dr Kelvin Lee, Senior Lecturer of the Academy of Film, to design an animated story to promote treatment adherence among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis.
