HKBU hosts conference to discuss intellectual property in academia

The Knowledge Transfer Office and the University Library co-organised a conference on the topic of “Intellectual Property in Academia: Why care? Understanding Trademark and Copyright in Education” recently to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day. Over 120 faculty members and librarians from local institutions gathered on HKBU campus to acquire valuable insights from renowned experts and professionals in the field of intellectual property (IP).
IP protects creations of the mind, and covers a broad range, from inventions, literary and artistic works, designs and symbols to names and images used in commerce. IP issues are often very complex and can cause confusion for faculty and staff who may not be knowledgeable in the area and do not know where to get more information. The event was aimed at explaining IP and clarifying confusions in the context of academia – with topics such as trademark, copyright, open access publishing, fair dealing exemption, as well as Creative Commons licensing.
Four professionals were invited to speak at the conference; they were Ms May Chan, Trademark Solicitor of Spruson & Ferguson; Mr Ryan Ng, Senior Solicitor, Intellectual Property Department of the HKSAR Government; Professor Alice Lee, Associate Dean, Faculty of Law of The University of Hong Kong; and Ms Lyndsey Dixon, Regional Journals Editorial Director – Asia Pacific, Taylor & Francis Publishing.
At the panel discussion led by Dr Alfred Tan, Head of Knowledge Transfer Office, many questions from the audience were answered. The first-ever HKBU Copyright Guide (hkbu.libguides.com/copyrightandip) was also launched by the Library at the conference. It is hoped that the Guide could provide an overview and address some of the common questions, and facilitate further discussions on IP.
