HKBU took the lead to establish the Community of Practice for Service-Learning in Hong Kong Higher Education (CoP-SLHE) in March 2018 with the goal of promoting cross-institutional capacity building for service-learning. To mark its official launch, a ceremony cum keynote lecture was held on 3 May, attended by more than 70 teaching and administration staff from eight universities.

Officiating guests included Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU Dr Albert Chau, Associate Head of the Office of Service-Learning of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Dr Grace Ngai, Director of Office of Service-Learning of Lingnan University Professor Robin Snell, Honorary Director of the Centre for Innovative Service-Learning of HKBU Dr Kevin Yue, and Lecturer of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the Education University of Hong Kong Ms Leung Ka-wai.

At the event, Dr Judy Yeh, Assistant Professor of the Centre for General Education of National Sun Yat-sen University, delivered a keynote speech on “Making an Impact on Student Learning and Community: My Passion in Service-Learning”. Dr Yeh shared her life-long teaching experiences in using Service-Learning to empower youth to pursue their passion and to utilise their strengths and leadership skills to make the world a better place.

The HKBU’s Centre for Innovative Service-Learning, which connects academic departments to community partners, facilitates the formation of interdisciplinary teams, and provides appropriate training and support for students and staff, serves as the Secretariat of the CoP-SLHE.

CoP-SLHE is a UGC-funded initiative jointly organised by HKBU, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the Education University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University. CoP-SLHE aims to facilitate sharing of experiences among service-learning practitioners and interested staff from all UGC-funded institutions and to promote collective learning and the scholarship of teaching and learning in service-learning.
