BBA students scoop second runner-up at Peeptrade global investment challenge

A team of four students from the School of Business came third at the Peeptrade University Challenge held recently at the University of Chicago, USA. They competed against undergraduate teams from top universities and business schools across the globe in the virtual investment contest.

The HKBU winning team comprised Chan Ngai-yeung (BBA Finance, Year 4), Liu Minghui (BBA Accounting, Year 3), Wang Yuzi (BBA Finance, Year 4) and Zhu Haotian (BBA Finance, Year 3). They competed against contestants from the University of Technology Sydney, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, and Loras College in the final. Their presentation to defend their investment choices and strategy impressed the panel of seasoned finance professionals.

During the two-month-long investment contest, each participating team was required to construct a portfolio using a virtual endorsement of US$1 million of stocks and track its performance over a period using sophisticated financial metrics. The top 10 teams were then invited to give a presentation, and were scored based on the performance of their investment policy statement and compliance, the execution of their strategy, the metrics of their performance and risk compliance.

Team member Chan Ngai-yeung said: “The Challenge provided us with hands-on experience in investment management and trading. I think teamwork matters the most when it comes to managing an aggressive and high-risk portfolio, as we had to research and backtest very carefully to ensure our strategy would work in a longer investment horizon.”

“By adding supplementary strategies like event-driven, fundamental and technical analyses to our portfolio, we managed to apply what we learnt from school to our investment decisions which turned out well,” another member Zhu Haotian added. The team especially thanked Ms Connie Leung and Dr Astrophel Choo from the Department of Finance and Decision Sciences for their professional coaching and advice throughout the competition.

The Peeptrade University Challenge 2018 attracted 55 teams from 37 universities and business schools worldwide to compete in undergraduate and graduate divisions respectively. The Challenge offers students an opportunity to apply their analytical, business and investment management skills in stock selection and portfolio management.

Peeptrade University Challenge
