Department of History kicks off 40th Anniversary with outstanding alumna Lo Koon-lan’s sharing

The Department of History (HIST) is turning 40 in 2018. To celebrate this significant milestone, a Kick-off Ceremony for the 40th Anniversary and a sharing by an outstanding alumna Ms Lo Koon-lan were held on 2 February.

Jointly organised by HIST and Alumni Affairs Office, the event attracted about 250 participants including HKBU senior management, faculty members and staff, students and members of the public.

In the opening remarks, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin first extended his warm blessings to HIST and congratulated them on achieving so much in the past 40 years. He was delighted to see many HIST graduates becoming successful leaders in different fields. He also mentioned two HIST students who were the first in Hong Kong to win the CY Tung Scholarship. Their outstanding performance had impressed the organisers of the Semester at Sea (SAS) programme and opened the door of opportunities for subsequent HKBU students.

At the event, a short video (please click here) that documents the Department’s journey since the 1970s was played to the audience.

In addition, a conversation with an outstanding alumna Ms Lo Koon-lan on “What Makes a History Major Love Acting?” followed the Kick-off Ceremony. Ms Lo shared her path that began as a HIST graduate and led to her career as a successful actress and drama performer. Ms Lo remarked that studying History is like looking through a telescope as it allows her to learn from the past and be more alert when dealing with matters in life, while acting is like looking through a microscope as it enables her to experience the life of different characters and understand human nature thoroughly. By investigating different incidents and facts, she concluded that History is not a single event but interlinked, with many stories connecting tiny matters, and this is what makes History so interesting.
