HKBU held its 58th Commencement on 9, 10, 11 and 13 November to confer undergraduate degrees and higher degrees on more than 6,500 graduates, including about 1,300 graduates from the Beijing Normal University – HKBU United International College. In addition, the University conferred honorary doctoral degrees on five distinguished persons today (13 November) for their outstanding achievements in their fields and remarkable contributions to society.

World-renowned experimental physicist Professor Donal D C Bradley received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Distinguished community leader Mrs Chan Wong Shui, Pamela (陳黃穗) was awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa. Outstanding entrepreneur Dr William Fung Kwok-lun (馮國綸) was presented with the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Leading historian of modern China Professor William C Kirby received the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa. Nobel Laureate in Literature Professor Mo Yan (莫言) was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa

HKBU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin said the five honorary doctorate recipients had demonstrated how one can embrace changes and make a difference in the world. He said they serve as role models for the student graduates. In his address, Professor Chin spoke on “Embrace AI with Liberal Arts”. He highlighted the issues arising from the development of artificial intelligence (AI), such as moral, ethical and social challenges, and said that in this age, society does not only need technology majors or STEM graduates but more than ever, it needs graduates grounded in the liberal arts and humanities.

Professor Chin said that HKBU’s liberal arts education refines graduates’ critical thinking, prepares them to adapt to change, to be compassionate, responsible and civically minded citizens with a deep sense ethics, so that graduates can carve out their own path and make a difference in the new AI era.
.
Speaking on behalf of the honorary doctorate recipients, Professor William Kirby shared on the importance of whole person education and said that the purpose of universities is to be a place of new vision. He added that great universities pursue “education with a world view”, are global in their perspective, learning from each other. Hong Kong’s universities are without question stronger through internationalisation and engagement with Mainland China. They are stronger still when they engage, as HKBU has done, while retaining their own unique educational DNA, their strong traditions of governance, and their commitment to the academic autonomy that is the precondition for excellence in any university.
