The presentation ceremony was officiated by Professor Roland Chin, HKBU President and Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Chung Pak-kwong, Head of the Department of Physical Education.

President Chin reiterated the University’s commitment to a research-led liberal arts education that is people oriented, with the aim of comprehensively developing students’ academic capabilities as well as their dedication to social services, global mindset and moral character. He added that in line with HKBU’s caring culture, many new initiatives have been created, such as EAAS, to support young people with different talents and backgrounds to pursue undergraduate education.

President Chin expressed his hopes for the elite athletes to continue their pursuit of excellence in sports and academic studies, to promote a healthy lifestyle and contribute to society.

Professor Chung said that the EAAS introduced last year has been well received. This year, the awarded athletes not only specialise in a variety of sports, but also study in different programmes at HKBU, including those not related to sports. This certainly helps them to broaden their knowledge horizon. The Department will continue to provide athletes with various types of support so that they can strike a good balance between training, competing and studying.

EAAS awards scholarships to between 10 and 20 elite athletes each year and accepts undergraduate student applications through the JUPAS and Non-JUPAS admission schemes. Athletes are required to meet the minimum entry requirements of HKBU and should be members of HKSAR sports teams with outstanding performances in the Olympics or international games. Retired athletes of HKSAR sports teams who have achieved outstanding results in international sports events are also eligible to apply. Selected athletes can study degree programmes offered by HKBU and are not limited to physical education programmes.
