HKBU to confer honorary doctoral degrees on five distinguished persons

浸大下月頒授榮譽博士學位予五位傑出人士

HKBU will confer honorary doctoral degrees at its Commencement on 13 November on five distinguished persons for their outstanding achievements in their fields and remarkable contributions to society.
 
World-renowned experimental physicist Professor Donal D C Bradley will receive the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Distinguished community leader Mrs Chan Wong Shui, Pamela (陳黃穗) will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa. Outstanding entrepreneur Dr William Fung Kwok-lun (馮國綸) will be presented with the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa. Leading historian of modern China Professor William C Kirby will be presented with the degree of Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa. Nobel Laureate in Literature Professor Mo Yan (莫言) will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa
  
Professor Donal Bradley (Doctor of Science, honoris causa)
 
Professor Donal Bradley is Head of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division at the University of Oxford in the UK.
 
Professor Bradley is a renowned experimental physicist with a research focus on plastic electronics. He is the co-inventor of conjugated polymer electroluminescence which has led to many application-focused activity and patents, and he has championed various new initiatives in cross-faculty research. An ISI Highly Cited researcher, he is among the top 1% most cited authors in the world for publications in materials science over the past decade.
 
His research achievements have been recognised by numerous awards and fellowships, including Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), fellowship and Brian Mercer Award for Innovation of the Royal Society, fellowship and Michael Faraday Medal and Prize of the Institute of Physics, and fellowship and Faraday Medal of the Institution of Engineering and Technology in the UK. He is also an editorial board member of several renowned journals and research funding panels. 
 
Prior to joining the University of Oxford in 2015, Professor Bradly had held various important academic positions, including Imperial College London’s Vice-Provost (Research) and Head of the Department of Physics, and he had also worked at the University of Sheffield and University of Cambridge. 
 
He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Associateship of the Royal College of Science at Imperial College London and completed his PhD studies at the University of Cambridge. He was conferred a Doctor of Science, honoris causa, by the University of Sheffield in the UK.
  
Mrs Pamela Chan (Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)
 
Mrs Pamela Chan graduated from the Department of Social work of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Peking University. She served as Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Consumer Council for 22 years until she retired. During her term in office, the Council successfully raised public awareness on consumer rights and responsibilities, prompted Hong Kong government to review and enact laws to enhance consumer protection and gained high credibility. 
 
Mrs Chan played a pivotal role in leading the worldwide movement to strengthen consumer rights, serving as Council and Executive member of Consumers International and was elected as President from 1997 to 2000. In recognition of her contributions, the China Consumer Association awarded her a Gold Award and the American Council on Consumer Interests also conferred the Rhoda Karpatkin Consumer International Award on her.
 
Over the years, Mrs Chan has devoted herself to community services. She has served on various boards and committees such as the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong Housing Authority and the Law Reform Commission of Hong Kong, among others. She was the Chairperson of the Hong Kong Council for Social Service, and the Hong Kong Deposit Protection Board. Currently, she is the Vice-Patron of The Community Chest, and Vice-Chairman of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong.
 
In the higher education sector, Mrs Chan was a member of the University Grants Committee. As Deputy Chairman of HKBU’s Council and Court from 2013 to 2016, she served as Chairman of the Personnel Committee and many other positions that contributed significantly to the University’s advancement.
 
Mrs Chan’s significant contributions have been widely recognised. She was presented a Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and an Honorary Fellowship by The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She was also appointed Justice of the Peace.
  
Dr William Fung (Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa)
 
Dr William Fung is the Deputy Chairman of the Fung Group of companies, Group Chairman of Li & Fung Limited and Chairman of Global Brands Group Holding Limited. 
 
A graduate from Princeton University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in the US, Dr Fung successfully transformed the traditional export trading company founded by his grandfather into a multinational group with diverse business interests, including trading, logistics, distribution and retailing. The Company was first listed in Hong Kong in 1973, privatised in 1989 and relisted in 1992. The Company now boasts over 25,000 employees operating in over 50 countries worldwide.  
 
Over the years, Dr Fung has held key positions in major trade and business associations. He was formerly the chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong Exporters’ Association and the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation Council. 
 
For his outstanding entrepreneurship, Dr Fung was named one of the world’s Top 25 Managers in 1995 and 50 stars of Asia in 2000 by Business Week. Together with his brother Dr Victor Fung, he was named “Businessman of the Year for 2005” by Forbes Magazine, and the brothers were also honoured as one of Time Magazine’s “60 Years of Asian Heroes”. Dr. Fung was conferred the Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, by The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
 
Dr Fung supports many charity initiatives through his family foundations and has made significant donations to HKBU for the establishment of the Fung Hon Chu Endowed Chair of Humanics, the Fung Scholarships, and the Fung Service Leadership Initiative which help nurture young talents.
  
Professor William Kirby (Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa)
 
Professor William Kirby is T M Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University and Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School in the US.
 
Professor Kirby is a leading historian of modern China with research interests that extend to China’s business, economic and political development in an international context. He has published extensively on contemporary issues of Chinese society, including China’s relations with Europe, the history of China’s modern capitalism, the history of freedom in China, and relations across the Taiwan Strait.
 
A graduate of Dartmouth College, Professor Kirby obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees at Harvard University. He also received a Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa, from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Doctor of Philosophy, honoris causa, from Freie Universität Berlin in Germany.
 
An experienced and highly dynamic university administrator, Professor Kirby was Head of Harvard’s History Department, Director of the Harvard University Asia Center, and Dean of Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He also holds other important positions at Harvard University which have contributed a lot to developing relations with China. He was Director of Harvard University’s Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and serves as Chairman of the Harvard China Fund and Faculty Chair of the Harvard Center Shanghai.
 
Professor Kirby has an in-depth familiarity with the higher education sector in Hong Kong.  He was a member of the University Grants Committee (UGC) of Hong Kong and was Chairperson of the Selection Panel of the UGC Teaching Award. 
  
Professor Mo Yan (Doctor of Letters, honoris causa)
 
Renowned writer and Nobel laureate Professor Guan Moye, better known by his pen name Mo Yan, is Dean of the Literature Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, and Vice-President of China Writers Association. 
 
Mo Yan started his literary career in the 1980s. He is the author of more than 100 short fictions and long novels. He is also an ardent script writer of plays and screenplays. His numerous works include Red Sorghum Saga, The Republic of Wine, Sandalwood Death, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, and Our Jing Ke, which have been translated into a dozen foreign languages for publication in different countries. 
 
In recognition of his phenomenal achievements, Mo Yan received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012, and his novel Life, Death, Exhaustion won HKBU’s prestigious Dream of the Red Chamber Award in 2008. He has also received numerous awards including, among other national literary prizes, Mao Dun Literature Prize, the National Prize (Novella), the United Literature Prize of Taiwan, the Dajia Red River Literature Prize, the Chinese Literature Media Prize (Annual Outstanding Achievement Prize) of China; the Laure Bataillin Prize, the Grand Prize of the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize, the French Arts and Literature Knight Medal of France; and the Nonino International Prize of Italy.
 
Mo Yan graduated from People’s Liberation Army Arts College and obtained a MA degree from Beijing Normal University in China, and was conferred a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, by The Open University of Hong Kong.

香港浸會大學將於11月13日舉行的畢業典禮上,頒授榮譽博士學位予五位傑出人士,以表揚他們的卓越成就,以及對社會的重大貢獻。
 
知名的實驗物理學家Donal D C Bradley教授將獲授予榮譽理學博士,傑出的社會領袖陳黃穗女士將獲授榮譽社會科學博士、企業家馮國綸先生將獲授榮譽工商管理博士,著名的現代中國歷史學家柯偉林教授(William C Kirby)將獲授榮譽人文學博士,而諾貝爾文學獎得主莫言(管謨業)教授將獲頒榮譽文學博士。
  
Donal Bradley教授(榮譽理學博士)
 
Donal Bradley教授是英國牛津大學數學、物理及生命科學學部主任。
 
Bradley教授是知名的實驗物理學家,致力於研究分子電子材料的應用和裝置,從而發展塑料電子等嶄新的技術平台,更是共軛聚合物電致發光的共同發明者之一。這項發明啟發了不同的應用研究,並獲得多項專利權。
 
他成功帶領多個跨學科研究項目,在過去10年,他是全球材料科學領域的學術論文徵引榜上,首1%最多論文被引用的學者。
 
Bradley教授的研究成就亦獲廣泛認同,曾獲頒多項榮譽及院士銜,包括大英帝國司令勳章、英國皇家學會院士及布箂恩.梅瑟創新奬、英國工程及科技學會和物理學會分別頒授的院士及法拉第獎章等。他亦擔任多份權威學術刊、研究基金的委員會成員。
 
Donal Bradley教授於2015年加入牛津大學,之前曾在倫敦帝國學院擔任多個重要學術崗位,包括副校長(研究)、物理系系主任等,又曾在英國雪菲爾大學及劍橋大學任職。他於倫敦帝國學院取得理學士學位及皇家科學學院準院士,其後於劍橋大學獲得博士學位,並獲雪菲爾大學頒授榮譽理學博士。
  
陳黃穗女士(榮譽社會科學博士)
 
陳黃穗女士畢業於香港中文大學社會工作學系,並取得北京大學法學學士。她出任消費者委員會總幹事達22年直至榮休,成功推動整個社會加深對消費者權益和責任的認識,並促使政府完善多項法規,將消委會塑造成為極具公信力的機構。
 
陳黃穗女士亦帶領全球消費者權益運動,獲選為國際消費者聯會理事、執委,並於1997年至2000年間獲選該聯會主席。為表彰她的貢獻,中國消費者協會向她頒授金章,其後又獲美國消費者權益委員會頒授Rhoda Karpatkin獎。
 
陳黃穗女士多年來擔任多項公職,包括醫院管理局、房屋委員會、法律改革委員會等,並曾任香港社會服務聯會主席和香港存款保障委員會主席。她現時擔任公益金副會長和香港小童群益會副主席。
 
在大學教育方面,陳黃穗女士曾任大學教育資助委員會委員。她於2013年至2016年間出任浸大校董會暨諮議會副主席、人事管理委員會主席等,促進大學發展不遺餘力。
 
陳黃穗女士的卓越貢獻備受肯定,包括獲香港特區政府頒授銅紫荊星章和香港中文大學頒授榮譽院士,以及獲委任為太平紳士。
  
馮國綸博士(榮譽工商管理博士)
 
馮國綸博士是馮氏集團副主席、利豐有限公司集團主席和利標品牌有限公司主席。
 
馮博士是美國普林斯頓大學和哈佛商學院畢業生。他成功帶領由祖父創立的傳統出口貿易公司,轉型成為一家世界級的供應鏈管理公司,業務涵蓋貿易、物流、分發和零售。公司在1973年首次上巿,其後於1989年私有化,並在1992年再次上巿。現時公司在全球50多個國家營運,員工超過25,000人。
 
馮博士曾在多個主要商會擔任要職,包括香港總商會、香港出口商會及太平洋經濟合作香港委員會的主席。
 
作為出色的企業家,馮博士獲權威財經雜誌《商業周刊》於1995年選為全球25位最佳經理,其後於2000年入選為亞洲50位知名人士。他和兄長馮國經博士榮膺不少榮譽,包括獲著名商業雜誌《福布斯》選為2005年最佳企業家,和入選《時代雜誌》的60年亞洲英雄榜。此外,馮博士獲香港科技大學和香港理工大學頒授榮譽工商管理學博士。
 
馮博士熱心貢獻社會,透過其家族慈善基金大力支持香港多項有意義的項目。馮博士旗下的基金會慷慨捐資浸大,成立馮漢柱基金全人教育講座教授席、馮氏獎學金和馮氏服務領導計劃等,積極培育年青人才。
  
柯偉林教授(榮譽人文學博士)
 
柯偉林教授是哈佛大學 T M Chang 中國研究講座教授及哈佛商學院斯潘格勒家族講座教授。
 
柯偉林教授是研究現代中國的歷史的權威學者。他不單研究歷史,更會從國際的宏觀角度,探討中國商業、經濟和政治發展。他發表多篇關於中國當代社會的文章及著作,例如中歐關係、中國當代資本主義歷史、社會自由的發展歷程、海峽兩岸關係等。
 
柯偉林教授畢業於美國達特茅斯學院,在哈佛大學取得碩士和博士,並獲香港理工大學頒授榮譽人文學博士和德國柏林自由大學頒授榮譽哲學博士。
 
柯偉林教授有豐富大學行政經驗,曾擔任哈佛大學歷史系系主任、亞洲研究中心主任、文理學院院長等要職,又積極開拓哈佛與中國的夥伴關係,曾任哈佛大學費正清中國研究中心主任、哈佛中國基金會主席及哈佛中心(上海)講座教授。
 
柯偉林教授與香港高等教育關係密切,自2009年至2015年出任大學教育資助委員會(教資會)委員,期間亦擔任教資會傑出教學獎遴選委員會主席。
  
莫言教授(榮譽文學博士)
 
筆名莫言的管謨業教授是國際著名作家和諾貝爾文學獎得主,他現任中國藝術研究院文學院院長,兼任中國作家協會副主席,於文壇享負盛名。
 
莫言教授於1980年代開始創作,先後著作逾百部長篇和短篇小說,又編寫話劇和電影劇本,著名作品有《紅高梁家族》、《酒國》、《檀香刑》、《豐乳肥臀》和《我們的荊軻》等,其中多部作品更被翻譯成10多種語言。
 
為表揚他在文學上的傑出貢獻,莫言教授於2012年獲頒諾貝爾文學獎。他的著作《生死疲勞》於2008年獲得浸大的紅樓夢獎:世界華文長篇小說獎。除此之外,莫言教授亦曾獲頒中國全國中篇小說獎、茅盾文學獎、台灣聯合文學獎、中國大家.紅河文學獎、中國華語文學傳媒大獎(年度傑出成就獎)、法國儒爾.巴泰雍獎、日本福岡亞洲文化大獎、法蘭西文化藝術騎士勳章和意大利諾尼諾國際文學獎等。
 
莫言教授畢業於解放軍藝術學院,後於北京師範大學取得文藝學碩士學位,並獲香港公開大學頒授榮譽文學博士。
