HKBU announced the appointment of Professor Louis Nixon as the new Director of the Academy of Visual Arts, with effect from 1 January 2018.

Professor Nixon is a practising artist and art researcher with over 25 years of work experience in art and design education and administration. He is experienced in cross-disciplinary research projects across the subject areas of fine arts, film making, photography, design, architecture, and art and design history.

Announcing the appointment, President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Roland Chin said: “Professor Nixon is a world renowned scholar and a prominent artist, I believe that with his vision and leadership, the Academy of Visual Arts will further develop as a top internationally acclaimed art school and continue to nurture creative and passionate young artists for the world.”

Professor Nixon is currently Associate Dean of Research and Director of the Art Research Institute at Kingston School of Art, Kingston University in the UK. Prior to his current appointment, he headed the School of Fine Art at the University from 2006 to 2014. Professor Nixon said, “I am delighted to be leading the Academy of Visual Arts through the next stage of its development. Although still relatively new, the Academy is already making an important impact on the creative and cultural landscape in Hong Kong and internationally.  I look forward to continuing to develop the research profile and international standing of the Academy and working closely with the established and emerging creative cultural organisations in Hong Kong, at a time when we are seeing unprecedented investment and interest in the visual arts here.”

A practising sculptor and curator, Professor Nixon founded the public art collective Space Explorations and has participated in large-scale urban interventions in public spaces and sites across London. He has exhibited projects in many countries including Italy, Serbia, Armenia, Chile and Australia. Professor Nixon graduated from Chelsea School of Art specialising in painting, and obtained a post-graduate diploma at the Slade School of Fine Art of University College London, majoring in sculpture.

On behalf of the University, President Chin thanked the retired Director of the Academy of Visual Arts Professor John Aiken for his valuable contribution and dedication to the Academy which has brought it to a new level of excellence.
