HKBU rowers achieve historic result at Jackie Chan Challenge Cup

The HKBU rowing team clinched three gold, two silver and two bronze medals as well as the first runner-up title in the overall, men’s and women’s categories respectively in the Jackie Chan Challenge Cup Hong Kong Universities Rowing Championships. Moreover, the men’s team made history by winning the Men's Coxed Eight event for the first time in 23 years.
Tai Ka-lam (Geography Year 4), the HKBU Rowing Club’s Internal Vice-President, said that while the team line-up had changed over the years, these changes had not affected the team’s competitive momentum. Team members had devoted themselves to comprehensive training over the past three months, not only familiarising themselves with the practical tactics involved in competitions, but also improving their physical fitness and skill levels.
Ka-lam added that when the men’s team reached the finals of  the Men's Coxed Eight event, the hope was of course to make history. But the competing team was from CUHK, well known as one of toughest competitors. Excited teammates and alumni flocked to the venue to cheer on their team, and the finishing line was packed with HKBU supporters. “The Office of Student Affairs always offers assistance to the Rowing Club and its staff members also watch the competition and show their support for us every year. This year, Dr Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), also joined us as well. His presence was valuable to us and significantly boosted our morale,” she said. Despite the fierce competition, the men’s team performed well enough to clinch the championship.
Several large-scale competitions are scheduled for the coming months, and Ka-lam said the HKBU rowers are well prepared, ready and waiting to achieve even better results.
