History and language scholars’ works win publishing awards

Two Chinese books by HKBU scholars, Professor Chung Po-yin and Dr Chu Siu-cheung, recently won awards in the First Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards.

The Way of Taikoo – A History of the Swire Enterprise in China, 1866-2016, written by Professor Chung Po-yin of the Department of History, won the Best Publication Biennial Award in the Business and Management Category, while Reading of classical Chinese, Volumes 1-2, reviewed and edited by Dr Chu Siu-cheung, Senior Lecturer of the Language Centre, won the same award in the Language Learning Category.

The Way of Taikoo illustrates the 150-year history of John Swire & Sons Limited in China, how it has grown and diversified from a small import-export business into a multi-disciplined conglomerate. Professor Chung spent two years to complete this project. By reading about the development of the Swire enterprise in China and Hong Kong, readers can reconstruct the growth and competition in shipping, sugar manufacturing and the aviation industry in contemporary Chinese history, and the role of Hong Kong.

The two volumes of Reading of classical Chinese are a collection of famous classical Chinese literature pieces. Dr Chu Siu-cheung is pleased and feels encouraged by winning the award. He hopes that the books can heighten readers’ interest in classical Chinese works and enable more people to appreciate them.

The Hong Kong Publishing Biennial Awards are organised by the Hong Kong Publishing Professionals Society to encourage quality publishing in Hong Kong.
