HKBU representatives shine at World Genius Convention with start-up project

A seven-member Hong Kong team from HKBU, City University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology won the Special Gold Medal and Special Award for their innovative start-up project at the recent 31st World Genius Convention in Tokyo, Japan, outshining 72 other entries. Earlier the team had gained the Special Gold Medal at the Hong Kong Young Genius Award to represent Hong Kong to take part in the World Genius Convention.

The four HKBU members were Kong Chak-ming (Human Resources Management, Year 3), Chung Ho-yin (Computer Science, Year 4), Wei Wenzhou (Computer Science, Year 4), and alumnus Tsui Ka-ho. Their innovative project won the recognition of the judges by truly demonstrating the highly creative thinking of the team members.

“HomeTaste”, the project that earned the two honours, is an online sharing platform that enables travellers to Hong Kong to connect with local host families and experience authentic home dining. Through direct interaction with the host families via the platform, visitors get the opportunity to learn more about local cuisine and customs. At the same time, participating locals earn extra income by offering unique homemade meals to the travellers and also in a general way promote the tourism industry.

Chak-ming said the idea came from the team’s overseas learning experiences. Team members came to believe that conversation at meal times can facilitate cultural exchange since delicious food makes it easier to connect with people. He thanked the team advisor, Head of the Department of Economics Dr Cheng Yuk-shing, for his guidance and inspiration, and the School of Business and Faculty of Science for their support. He also expressed gratitude to the Knowledge Transfer Office for its professional service which enabled the team to transform an award-winning innovation submitted in a competition a year ago into a genuine start-up business.

The World Genius Convention was initiated by Japanese inventor Dr Yoshiro Nakamatsu. Now in its 31st year, the Convention provides a platform for international exchange on innovations and inventions with the aim of spurring the development of inventions globally.
