Chemistry PhD student wins awards for outstanding presentation in metabolomics study

化學博士生奪代謝組學傑出報告獎

Chemistry PhD student Li Xiaona won the Metabolomics Student Prize and the Student Travel Award presented by the Metabolomics Society at the Society’s 2017 conference held in Brisbane, Australia in late June.

The Society presented the travel awards to just 10 PhD students from around the world. Each of them had to deliver a presentation at the conference. Xiaona, who was the only Chinese student among the 10 candidates, was selected as the best presenter and won the Student Prize.

Xiaona’s oral presentation was entitled “LC-MS-based metabolomics revealed SLC25A22 as an essential regulator in TCA cycle, aspartate-derived amino acids and polyamines in KRAS-mutant colorectal cancer”. It is also part of her PhD research, which focuses on using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry to evaluate the metabolic effects of the gene on colorectal cancer cells. The findings provide insights into colorectal cancer cell growth and metastasis. According to the Metabolomics Society, Xiaona’s presentation demonstrated meritorious scientific accomplishments and innovative contributions to the field of metabolomics.

Xiaona said, “I would like to thank my supervisor Professor Cai Zongwei and my collaborators in CUHK for their guidance, encouragement and support. I am lucky to be able to conduct my research on the good platform provided by the Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis (HKBU), and work with excellent teachers and passionate students. I believe that more good research outcomes will be produced by the State Key Laboratory in the near future.”

化學系博士生李曉娜在6月底於澳洲布里斯本舉行的國際代謝組學協會會議上,因出色的演說報告而獲頒發代謝組學生獎和學生遊歷獎。該協會頒發遊歷獎予10位來自各國的學生,曉娜是唯一的華人。

曉娜的演說報告題為「LC-MS-based metabolomics revealed SLC25A22 as an essential regulator in TCA cycle, aspartate-derived amino acids and polyamines in KRAS-mutant colorectal cancer」,亦是她的博士研究部分項目。她使用液相色譜質譜儀去評估一種基因對大腸癌細胞的代謝影響。此成果有助進一步了解大腸癌細胞的生長和轉移。根據國際代謝組學協會的評語,曉娜的演說報告展現了傑出的科學成就,並對代謝組學帶來創新的貢獻。

曉娜說:「我很感謝指導老師蔡宗葦教授和中文大學的合作人員的指導、鼓勵與支持。我十分幸運能夠在浸大環境與生物分析國家重點實驗室夥伴實驗室這個先進的平台進行研究,並與優秀的師生一起工作,相信日後實驗室會有更多出色的研究成果。」
