Young HKBU mathematics scholar wins international recognition

浸大年輕數學家獲頒國際獎

Dr Liu Hongyu, Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics of HKBU, received the Calderon Prize at the 9th Applied Inverse Problems (AIP) Conference held in Hangzhou, China. Widely recognised as the highest award in the field of inverse problems, the prize is presented to researchers under the age of 40 who have made distinguished contributions in this field. Dr Liu and a scholar from the US were selected for the prize this year.

Dr Liu was honoured to receive the prestigious award in recognition of his mathematical research related to inverse problems. He said, “The HKBU Department of Mathematics has provided an excellent environment for innovative and original research development. Our group at HKBU has conducted systematic studies on several inverse problems including inverse scattering, wave imaging and metamaterial cloaking. We work on both the theoretical and computational aspects of those inverse problems and consider their applications in medical imaging and artificial intelligence technology.”

Inverse problems arise from the need to interpret indirect measurements. They lie at the core of many areas of science and technology such as medical imaging, non-destructive testing, underground prospecting, astronomical imaging, imaging processing and data mining. The AIP Conference is the premier scientific meeting for this field and is organised by the Inverse Problems International Association (IPIA) every two years. The IPIA presents the Calderon Prize every two years at the AIP Conference.

浸大數學系副教授劉宏宇博士在浙江杭州舉行的第九屆國際應用反問題會議上獲頒發「卡爾德隆獎」。獎項授予40歲以下,並在反問題領域上有傑出貢獻的學者,被廣泛認為是該領域中的最高榮譽。今年,劉宏宇博士與一位來自美國的學者一同獲選。

劉博士認為獎項肯定了他在數學反問題研究上的成就,對此感到榮幸。他說:「浸大數學系對創新和原創的研究提供了極大的支持,營造了非常好的研究環境。我們的研究團隊對數個反問題開拓了系統性的研究,包括反散射、波成像及超穎材料塗層。我們對這些反問題進行理論分析和數值模擬的研究,同時亦考慮它們在醫學成像和人工智能中的應用。」

反問題廣泛出現於對觀測及測量數據的反演和推理中,如醫療成像、無損探傷、地質勘探、太空探索、圖像處理和數據挖掘等領域的核心部分。國際應用反問題會議是該領域內最大型的會議之一,由國際反問題協會每兩年舉辦一次,並在會議上頒發「卡爾德隆獎」。
