HKBU student delegates showcase their outstanding entrepreneurial talents and capture four prizes

HKBU students shine at Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition


Four HKBU student teams won three second prizes and one third prize at the “Challenge Cup” National Competition – Hong Kong Regional Final – Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition held at the Hong Kong Science Park on 22 and 23 May. The HKBU entries were among 181 projects submitted from nearly 600 students from local tertiary institutions.

Jessie Kwok (Financial Journalism, Year 2) won a second prize for start-up projects under the “Entrepreneurship” category of the competition for her online platform entitled “LeDo Ads”, which was jointly developed with her partners. Their project focused on ways to turn unused offline advertising spaces into cost-effective ones on which small and medium-sized enterprises with tight budgets can promote their services and products. 

Three teams made up of five postgraduate students from the School of Chinese Medicine won two of the second prizes and one third prize. Among them, Pan Wenhui and Xia Yixuan won a second prize for start-up projects. Their project was entitled “Avantgarde Formulation of Skin-lightening and Skin-protecting Products with Natural Ingredients”. They set up a biotechnology company to develop skin products suitable for oriental skin by extracting compounds from Chinese medicinal plants.

Another second prize winner, for innovation in life sciences, was Lu Jun for his research thesis entitled “Develop a Highly Water Soluble Nucleolin Aptamer Paclitaxel Conjugate with a Cathepsin Labile Linker for Tumor Specific Targeting in Ovarian Cancer”. Meanwhile Dang Lei and Shaikh Atik Badshah were awarded the third prize for innovation in life sciences for their research paper entitled “Osteoblastic PLEKHO1 contributes to articular inflammation and bone repair failure in rheumatoid arthritis”.

The “Challenge Cup” National Competition – Hong Kong Regional Final is a platform that facilitates exchange on innovative technology and entrepreneurship. It seeks to enhance the abilities of students to embark on innovative technology projects and entrepreneurial pursuits with a view to nurturing talents for the benefit of Hong Kong and also promoting exchange between local university students and mainland talents.
