HKBU wins outstanding award in Energy Saving Championship Scheme

Following its continued efforts to promote energy saving and environmental conservation, the University won the Hanson Outstanding Award in the Post-secondary Education Institution category of the Energy Saving Championship Scheme 2016 with its Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building.

The Jockey Club School of Chinese Medicine Building has incorporated a variety of energy saving technologies in its renovation work and hardware enhancement projects since 2013 to optimise venue utility and improve energy efficiency.  The project resulted in a remarkable saving of energy of over 450,000 kWh – equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 90 households for a year.

Apart from consistently upgrading existing buildings on campus with energy efficient options, the Task Force on Sustainable Campus and the Estates Office have proactively engaged University members to make changes in their personal behaviour to help reduce long-term energy consumption. These steps include promoting and implementing the Campus Sustainability Guide through the Sustainable Office Scheme to exchange and foster good green practices with staff green ambassadors, and the U-wise Energy Patrol conducted by student green ambassadors to monitor the University community’s energy usage patterns and habits.

Organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the HKSAR Government, the Energy Saving Championship Scheme recognises leading organisations that adopt energy efficient technologies and equipment, apply the operational optimisation of energy consuming systems, develop best practices in energy management and promote energy saving by tenants and other occupants.

Meanwhile, HKBU also signed the Energy Saving Charter 2017 organised by EMSD to demonstrate its dedication to improving energy efficiency and maximising its energy saving capacity.
