Works of Visual Arts alumni on display at Chiang Mai Photo Festival
Three Academy of Visual Arts (AVA) alumni were invited to showcase their photographic work in the collaborative exhibition “Young Eyes+”, part of the Chiang Mai Photo Festival 2017 held in Thailand in February. The exhibition featured the works of young emerging artists selected from photography related programmes of 20 universities from Thailand, USA, Sweden, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia and the Philippines, including Parsons School of Design; The New School, USA; Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, Sweden; Tokyo Polytechnic University, Japan; Chung-Ang University, Korea, which are renowned institutions that provide quality photography related programmes.
In “To Be Used Someday”, Fion Hung rearranges a collection of her mother’s items, which are no longer in use, in an artistic way so that the items could be used someday for a different purpose. Through the work, Fion attempted to create a dialogue with her mother. Her work received the Young Talent Award at the AVA’s BA Graduation Exhibition 2016.
The work “Local Tourist” by Terry Ng explores the topics of identity and tourism between Hong Kong and Mainland China. The work has also been showcased in international exhibitions including Lianzhou International Photo Festival, Argentina International Photo Festival and Angkor Photo Festival.
The mixed-media work “Whole” produced by Leona Poon explores drawing and photographic image, restoration and memory.
Professor Swetlana Heger-Davis, Dean of Umeå Academy of Fine Arts, praised AVA alumni’s works as conceptually strong, visually smart, and being able to deal with personal and global issues through art.
