HKBU students win silver at national entrepreneurship contest

A student delegation comprising two students from the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) and two students from the School of Business were successful in the China College Students Entrepreneurship Competition 2016 in Chengdu, Sichuan province, last month. The team won a silver award under the “Start-up Business Plan” category for their proposal to establish a conceptual company called “Fornix Medicine Limited”. The company aimed to sell traditional herbal pastes – gao fang.

The winning team were Yu Jucheng and Zhang Yilin, (Bachelor of Chinese Medicine and Bachelor of Biomedical Science programme, Year 5), Song Jia (Accounting, Year 3), and Wang Tian (Finance, Year 4). Their proposal was to set up a flagship store in a prosperous business district to sell herbal pastes for treating chronic diseases. The pastes were designed to have an obvious therapeutic effect and at the same time be easy to use and tasty. As well as selling the products over the counter, the company would set up areas where customers could take a coffee break and join workshops at which Chinese medicine-themed refreshments were prepared. The aim was for customers to have fun while they were shopping.

Yu Jucheng said that the team’s intention was not just to make money by selling herbal pastes. They also hoped to alter the public’s perception of traditional Chinese medicines and to create a modern healthcare system using Chinese medicines. They expressed their gratitude to Dr Kevin Yue, Associate Professor of SCM, for his guidance, the Clinical Division for providing herbal pastes samples, and the Knowledge Transfer Office for its assistance.

This year, the biennial competition attracted 110,000 entries from more than 2,200 higher education institutions nationwide. A total of 24 projects from 11 tertiary institutions in Hong Kong were selected for the contest. The competition covered three major categories, namely “Start-up Business Plan”, “Social Enterprise”, and “Entrepreneurial Practice”.
