SCM PhD students win recognition for outstanding research in bone and joint diseases

Mr Liang Chao and Mr Liu Jin, PhD students of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) won a travel award and a prize from the ESCEO-AgNovos Healthcare Young Investigator Awards respectively in recognition of their outstanding researches on bone and joint diseases. They both gained sponsorship to present their work at international conferences in Europe.

Mr Liang Chao won a travel award to attend the third Oxford symposium on aptamers, Aptamers 2016, which was held from 4 to 5 April 2016 at the University of Oxford, UK, at which he presented his work entitled “Oligopeptide aptamer-modified chalcone derivative specifically targets Smurf1 in osteoblasts and promotes bone formation”. The symposium brought together academic and industrial aptamer researchers to address therapeutic, diagnostic, analytical as well as basic research applications of aptamers.

Mr Liu Jin was granted a sponsorship by the ESCEO-AgNovos Healthcare Young Investigator Awards to attend the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases held in Malaga, Spain from 14 to 17 April, at which he made a poster presentation about his award-winning research paper entitled “miR-214-3p targets TRAF3 to promote osteoclastic bone resorption during the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis”. Co-organised by the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO) for healthcare professionals, researchers and young scientists, the Congress is the largest educational platform and most vibrant clinical research forum in the field of osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases in Europe.
