To promote global interaction and development of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) hosted the “International Forum on the Development of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Hospital” on campus last Saturday (12 March). A number of heads of Chinese medicine hospitals, deans of schools of medicine and traditional medicine as well as senior researchers of medical research institutes from the US, Australia, Germany, Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong assembled on the occasion and shared their rich experience and invaluable insights in Chinese medicine hospital operation and integrative Chinese and western medicine with more than 400 participants, including local Chinese medicine practitioners, teachers, students and alumni of SCM as well as members of the Chinese medicine industry.

Officiating at the Opening Ceremony were Dr Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food and Health, HKSAR Government; Dr Cindy Lai, Deputy Director of Health, HKSAR Government; Mr Wong Kit, Chairman, Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board, Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong; Mr Tommy Li, Executive Chairman, Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Industry Association; Professor Chan Wing-kwong, President, Hong Kong Registered Chinese Medicine Practitioners Association; Professor Edwin Yu, President, Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine; Mr Cheng Yan-kee, Chairman of the Council, HKBU; Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, HKBU; and Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of SCM, HKBU.

Speaking at the Ceremony, Mr Cheng Yan-kee said HKBU has been exploring the feasibility of a Chinese medicine hospital project for many years and is working hard to prepare the Expression of Interest for the establishment of a Chinese medicine hospital in Tseung Kwan O to be submitted to the Government. He said he believes the establishment of the first Chinese medicine hospital in Hong Kong is not only a vision of HKBU, but that it is a common vision and goal shared by many in the Chinese medicine sector and the community. Mr Cheng hoped that participants could make the most of the forum to share their views on this very important topic and contribute to the building of a Chinese medicine hospital and work together to write a new chapter in the history of Chinese medicine in Hong Kong.

In his speech, Professor Lu Aiping said HKBU is ready to build and run a Chinese medicine hospital, and the University Council has set up a task force to lead the preparation of an Expression of Interest for submission to the Government. HKBU has also started discussions with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong and other organisations with a view to working together to quickly realise the goal of establishing the first Chinese medicine hospital in Hong Kong. He is of the view that this hospital will not only meet the urgent needs of Chinese medicine education, the local healthcare system, the community and the Chinese medicine industry worldwide. It will also be a timely response to the “Strategic Outline Development Plan for Chinese Medicine (2016-2030)” promulgated by the State Council on 26 February 2016. Professor Lu said that the promulgation of the national strategic plan on the eve of this forum set a befitting backdrop for the discussion as well as HKBU’s Chinese medicine hospital project, and he hoped to see the launch of the project very soon.
