School of Chinese Medicine receives donation to launch wearable acupoint diagnostic and treatment device project

中醫藥學院獲捐款開展穿戴式穴位診療裝置研發項目

The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) recently received a donation of HK$500,000 from Ms Flora Chan, Executive Director, New World Strategic Investment Limited as a start-up fund for a wearable acupoint diagnostic and treatment device. In recognition of Ms Chan’s generosity to the University, a cheque presentation ceremony was held today (29 January) with Ms Chan and Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine, as the officiating guests.
 
Dr Zhang Shiping, Associate Professor of the Teaching and Research Division of SCM, who is the principal investigator of the project, said that more than half the world’s population will have suffered from knee pain in their lifetime. The main cause of chronic knee pain is knee osteoarthritis, which results from knee degenerative disease. Apart from joint replacement surgery, the existing medical treatments for knee degenerative disease are not very satisfactory.  
 
Dr Zhang therefore plans to design and develop a wearable acupoint diagnostic and treatment device to address knee pain. Applying the principles of acupuncture and combining it with new technologies such as wireless internet and artificial intelligence, the device can be easily worn by patients to perform treatment on their own, and both the healthcare providers and patients can monitor the condition of the affected knee and assess treatment progress.

中醫藥學院最近獲新世界策略投資有限公司執行董事陳菁女士慷慨捐贈50萬港元,作為研發一種針對膝痛的穿戴式穴位診療裝置的啟動經費。為答謝陳女士對大學的支持,學院今日(1月29日)舉行支票致送儀式,由陳菁女士與中醫藥學院院長呂愛平教授聯合主禮。
 
負責是次研發項目的中醫藥學院教學科研部副教授張世平博士表示,世界上有超過一半人都曾受到膝痛的影響和困擾,而慢性膝痛的主要原因,是由於膝關節退化所引致的膝骨性關節炎。對於膝關節退化病,目前在醫學上,除了進行關節置換手術外,其他的治療方法都不甚理想。
 
張博士因而計劃研發一種針對膝痛的穿戴式穴位診療裝置,該項裝置應用針灸的原理,結合流動互聯網和人工智能等新科技,讓患者可自行配戴進行治療,同時也可以讓醫護人員和患者同時監控病情和治療進展。
