HKBU student shines at National Geographic’s International Photo Contest

Kelvin Yuen (Associate Degree, Year 2 ) won the first prize and an honourable mention in the youth division of National Geographic’s International Photo Contest 2015 (Taiwan section).

Through the winning photo “Hunt your dream”, Kelvin wants to show how close the countryside and urban areas of Hong Kong are. While in “One night in dream”, the photo with a shadowy feel which earned Kelvin an honourable mention, only the tips of skyscrapers can be seen above the dense fog.

Kelvin was nicely surprised and excited to be awarded as his original reason for taking part in the contest was to gauge his standard of photography by comparing it with professionals. “I was satisfied and happy when I learnt that my submissions would go through to the final round. I even thought the organisers had mistakenly sent me the letter when it revealed that I won the top prize.”

Kelvin started taking landscape photos barely a year and a half ago but now he considers photography to be an indispensable part of his life. For the winning photo, he spent almost a month to plan and to prepare for it, with his eager devotion rivalling professional photographers.

He said he will continue to take landscape photos so that he can promote countryside protection among local people and help to strike a balance between development and conservation in Hong Kong.

The annual National Geographic Photo Contest, one of the most iconic photo competitions in the world, attracts photographers from around the globe to submit numerous brilliant photos every year.
