SCM scholar and student receive recognition from American Society for Bone and Mineral Research

中醫藥學院師生獲美國骨礦鹽研究學會嘉許

Dr Li Defang, Research Assistant Professor of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), recently won the 2015 Young Investigator Award presented by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) for his distinguished bone and joint diseases research paper. In his award-winning research paper entitled “Osteoclast-derived exosomal microRNA-214 inhibits osteoblastic bone formation”, Dr Li found that osteoclast-derived exosomal microRNA-214 could transfer in osteoblasts to inhibit bone formation. This is the first-ever study to reveal that microRNA-214 could serve as an intercellular messenger to mediate osteoclast-to-osteoblast communication for inhibiting osteoblastic bone formation.
 
In addition, Liu Jin, PhD student of SCM, was also awarded the 2015 ASBMR Young Investigator Travel Award for his research paper and delivered a poster presentation at the annual ASBMR meeting held in Seattle, US. Entitled “Osteoclastic microRNA-214 targets PTEN to increase bone resorption”, the award-winning paper reveals that microRNA-214 could target PTEN within osteoclast to increase bone resorption and uncovers the critical role of microRNA-214 in regulating osteoclastic bone resorption.

中醫藥學院研究助理教授李德芳博士憑優秀的骨與關節疾病研究論文,獲得美國骨礦鹽研究學會頒發2015年傑出青年學者獎。李博士的得獎論文題為「破骨細胞分泌的囊泡内microRNA-214抑制了成骨細胞骨形成」,研究發現了微小核酸(microRNA-214)可以囊泡的形式被破骨細胞分泌出來,進入成骨細胞調控骨形成,這是首項研究揭示了一種由微小核酸介導的破骨細胞對成骨細胞的調控新機制。
 
另外,中醫藥學院博士研究生劉進同學的另一研究論文「微小核酸microRNA-214靶向PTEN調控骨吸收」,亦獲美國骨礦鹽研究學會頒發青年學者遊歷獎。劉同學出席早前在美國西雅圖舉行的年會,並於會上展示他的論文海報,介紹他發現微小核酸(microRNA-214)可抑制破骨細胞內的PTEN基因的表達繼而調控骨吸收的研究,揭示了微小核酸(microRNA-214)在破骨細胞介導的骨吸收過程中的重要調控作用。
