HKBU receives HK$5 million donation from SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD to establish pharmacognosy laboratory

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) received a donation of HK$5 million from SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD for the establishment of the “Hong Kong Baptist University-SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD Pharmacognosy Laboratory” to promote research on the standardisation of Chinese materia medica

In recognition of the generous support of SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD, the University held an agreement signing and cheque presentation ceremony today (29 September). Officiating at the ceremony were Mr Liu Yude, Chairman of the Board, SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD; Professor Roland Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, HKBU; and Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM), HKBU.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Lu Aiping said that SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD has been offering SCM students at HKBU a base for internships since 2004 by providing them with a month of free training each year. On behalf of the School, Professor Lu expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the company for the long-term support and assistance provided to HKBU and said he was delighted that this cooperation could be further extended from education and nurturing talent to research.

Professor Lu said: “In order to speed up the development of Chinese medicine, it is essential to ensure the quality and quantity of Chinese herbal medicine. In this regard, the governments of both Mainland China and Hong Kong are working hard to promote the standardisation and production of Chinese herbs, Chinese medicinal decoction pieces and Chinese medicine.” He expressed the hope that SCM and SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD could contribute to the standardisation of Chinese materia medica through their concerted efforts and mutual cooperation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Liu Yude said that to provide an adequate range of reference for the study of the standardisation of quality grades for Chinese materia medica and Chinese medicinal decoction pieces as well as the the study of the suitability of geometric shapes for Chinese medicinal decoction pieces, SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD and SCM decided to focus on the two areas as the direction for their research. It is hoped that the research would also satisfy the needs of doctors and patients related to the different grades of Chinese materia medica and Chinese medicinal decoction pieces and optimise the therapeutic effect of the Chinese medicinal decoction pieces.

Mr Liu said: “We expect the research output to provide a scientific reference for the sophisticated management of the Chinese medicine product market as well as the establishment of the relevant standards in Hong Kong and Mainland China, thereby promoting the standardisation of Chinese materia medica and Chinese medicinal decoction pieces in the market and contributing to the Chinese medicine industry and public health.”

In view of the lack of studies on the standardisation of quality grades for Chinese materia medica and Chinese medicinal decoction pieces as well as the suitability of geometric shapes for Chinese medicinal decoction pieces, the School of Chinese Medicine of HKBU and SHENZHEN TSUMURA MEDICINE CO LTD will jointly establish a pharmacognosy laboratory at which a research platform will be built to set up standards for grading the quality of Chinese materia medica and Chinese medicinal decoction pieces as well as standards for the shapes for Chinese medicinal decoction pieces. It is hoped that through integrating the scientific resources of both parties in technology, output, equipment and personnel, the laboratory will contribute to the standardisation of Chinese materia medica and the long-term development of Chinese medicine.
