Accounting students come third in inter-varsity tax debate competition

A team of four BBA Accounting Year 3 students, Venus Lam, Cathy Lui, John Wong and Joseph Wong, won the second runner-up prize with their vast knowledge on taxation and analytical skills in the first Tax Debate Competition organised by the Taxation Institute of Hong Kong.
Cathy Lui said: “None of our team members have had any experience in debating, therefore, we were quite nervous throughout the competition especially given our lack of experience and the strict time constraints. We believe that it is our team spirit that led us to this great result. The competition also provided us with a valuable experience to meet people from different backgrounds.”
The competition was divided into three stages. Each team was given four possible debate topics six weeks prior to the competition so that they could prepare viewpoints to support and to refute the propositions of the assigned topics. Half an hour before each stage of the competition, the teams were informed of the side of the argument they represented.
