An inspiring group of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) students dedicated to the vision of responsible global citizenship organised the “Hong Kong Baptist University Global Youth Summit 2015” jointly with the Leadership Qualities Centre of the Office of Student Affairs on 28 and 29 March 2015. The inaugural summit with the theme of “Explore the Unexplored” had a lineup of activities which included inspiring speeches by keynote speakers, student-led presentations, poster exhibition and experiential learning activities. Participants came from seven local and Mainland tertiary institutions.

Dr Tse Ka-kui, Founding Chair of Hong Kong Social Entrepreneurship Forum and Founding Chair and Chief Education Officer of Education for Good CIC Ltd, was invited to share his rich experience in social entrepreneurship and to inspire youngsters to become change-makers. Dr Christie Lam, Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Osaka University and Co-founder of Future Village, delivered a speech on “Global Citizenship in the Age of Globalization”. In addition, through the critical examination of a range of global issues and the discussion of the rights and responsibilities of global citizens, participants’ critical thinking, moral commitment and positive engagement of global issues were aroused.

Apart from keynote speeches, participants also had the opportunity to be an “Explorer”- to see, to search and to handle the “unexplored”. Various experiential learning activities were arranged, including Chungking Mansions Services Centre Tour, Lei Yue Mun Historical Tour and the Yuen Long Ethnic Minority Tour. Through the implementation of the concept of “Act locally, Think globally”, participants’ awareness of global issues and understanding of what global citizenship means were enhanced.

Participating students came from HKBU, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education and Fudan University. The activity was sponsored by Wofoo Social Enterprises and the General Education Office of HKBU.
